Data Science Interview Guide: Tell a Credible Model Validation Story

By AI Leaf Global Learn · 10 October 2026

Present a prediction project with a baseline, a defensible split and honest uncertainty.

What makes a model project interview-ready?

A credible project story explains the prediction target, the information available at prediction time and how you evaluated unseen examples. Start with the decision the model would support. Then show a simple baseline and explain why your validation design represents that decision. A high score without a defensible evaluation is a weak portfolio claim.

Structure a short presentation

For an original practice case, imagine predicting whether an order will arrive late using information available when it is dispatched. Name the target, exclude facts learned after delivery and state which records belong together. Describe the dataset as synthetic if you invented it. Discuss permission and privacy before using real customer records.

Prepare five slides or README sections: question, data, baseline, validation and limitations. Keep one example record nearby so you can explain every feature. If a column would not exist at dispatch time, remove it before discussing model accuracy. This gives your interviewer a concrete way to assess your reasoning.

Show a baseline you can calculate

Here is a dependency-free JavaScript rehearsal, checked locally with Node. It evaluates a constant prediction, not a trained machine-learning model.

const labels = [0, 0, 0, 1, 1];
const predictions = labels.map(() => 0);
const correct = labels.filter((y,i) => y === predictions[i]).length;
console.log(correct / labels.length);

Expected output is 0.6. Explain what the label 1 means before quoting the number. If missing a late delivery is costly, accuracy alone does not express the full decision. Discuss the error types and the additional evaluation you would report.

Defend the split rather than memorising a ratio

Explain how you keep tuning decisions separate from the final evaluation. Random splitting is not automatically appropriate when future records differ from past records or when multiple rows belong to the same customer. Rehearse a time-based or group-based scenario and state why your chosen evaluation matches the intended use. Consult the official cross-validation reference for the available strategies.

Common preparation mistakes

Do not repeatedly change features after seeing the final test result and still call that an untouched test. Avoid claiming that a single score proves reliability in every setting. Report the sample size, evaluation design and failure cases. If you did not deploy the model, explain what you tested locally and what monitoring remains hypothetical.

Practice and expected result

Change the labels to [0,0,1,1,1]. The constant-zero baseline now scores 0.4. Explain why a changed label distribution changes this metric without changing the predictor. Prepare a short answer to: what evidence would persuade you that a more complex model improves on this baseline? Use measured held-out results, not invented placement or salary claims.
