Why Does My API Work in a Command-Line Client but Fail with CORS in the Browser?
Clarify browser origin checks, preflight requests and safe API configuration without exposing credentials.
The doubt: is CORS an API authentication error?
Not necessarily. CORS controls whether a browser makes a cross-origin response available to requesting page code. A command-line client does not enforce the browser's same-origin restrictions in the same way. Success there proves reachability for that client, not that a browser page may read the response.
Inspect both the network response and the browser console. The request might reach the server while page code is denied access to the result. Authentication, authorization and CORS are separate responsibilities; permitting an origin does not grant a user access to private records.
What counts as a different origin?
An origin is determined by scheme, host and port. The following JavaScript uses the standard URL parser. It was checked locally with Node.js and makes no network request.
const page = new URL('https://example.test:443/app');
const api = new URL('https://api.example.test/data');
console.log(page.origin);
console.log(api.origin);
console.log(page.origin === api.origin);
Expected output is https://example.test, https://api.example.test and false. Changing a path on the same origin does not create a different origin. Changing the host does, even when both hosts belong to the same organization.
Why is an OPTIONS request appearing?
Some cross-origin requests need a preflight check. The browser asks whether the intended method and headers are allowed before sending the main request. If preflight fails, changing business logic in the main handler may not solve the problem. Inspect the requested origin, method and headers and the matching server response.
Can I fix it with no-cors?
That is not a general solution for reading API JSON. A no-cors response can be opaque to page code. Likewise, disabling browser protections is not a production fix. Configure the server or an appropriate application backend to support the intended origin and request shape.
What about cookies and credentials?
Credentialed browser requests require compatible client and server settings. Do not combine credentialed access with a wildcard allowed origin. Review cookie rules and authorization as well; a correct CORS policy does not bypass them. Never copy tokens or cookies into a public debugging example.
Practice diagnosis
Write down the page origin, API origin, request method and custom headers. Check whether preflight occurs and whether the expected allow-origin response matches the page. Test a same-origin path change and predict that the origin comparison remains true. A real CORS behaviour test needs a browser and controlled servers; only the URL arithmetic exercise was executed in this preparation run.
